Maggie Melechi completed her BA (HONS) Fine Art Degree at Leeds Metropolitan University in 1988 specializing in large scale mixed media paintings often incorporating sculptural elements to create colourful and sensuous environments.
Recent works continue her exploration of colour, texture and mark making on a variety of scales. Her subject often alludes to the landscape, seascape and aspects of nature i.e. grottoes, volcanic and mountainous terrains, plants and flowers. Her inspiration is drawn from her travels in Southern Italy, Sicily and the contrasting Yorkshire landscape especially the North York Moors. Photography is also an important source of reference - her camera being her sketchbook.
She has works in many private and public collections including that of Sir Ernest Hall at Dean Clough Industrial Park, Bradford University and Yorkshire Television.
She has shown work in The Laing Contemporary Landscape/Seascape exhibition and was selected as a National finalist to exhibit at The Mall Galleries, London. She was also a first prize-winner at the Bradford Open Exhibition held at Cartwright Hall, Bradford. Some of Maggie’s paintings have appeared in a pilot TV Drama and also the huge triptych from Dean Clough was selected for the film Los Angeles without a Map; this work is now housed at Sir Ernest Hall’s home in Lanzarotte.
She has exhibited regularly in solo and mixed shows throughout England and recently in Northern Italy where she is establishing her reputation as a leading British artist. She has been an exhibiting member of The Leeds Fine Art Club, and was represented by the Reuben’s Gallery, Leeds who exhibited her work at:
The Battersea Affordable Arts Fair, London;
The Bristol Affordable Arts Fair;
The Newcastle Affordable Art Fair, Gateshead;
The Edinburgh Arts Fair.
